Ian: founder and private safari guide

After finishing his schooling in Moshi and later in Arusha, he went to Tourism College for two years studying tourism management, helped by his excellent language skills. He is fluent in Italian and Spanish as well as English. His native language is Chagga (a Bantu language).
Ian landed his first role as an interpreter on Mt Kilimanjaro climbs. This didn’t just put his brain to work, but also his legs. All in all, he has climbed Kilimanjaro more than 40 times. Looking for a new challenge, he headed south and began working as a field guide in Sand Rivers (one of the top safari camps in Selous game reserve, now called ‘’Nyerere National Park’). After seven years of experience, he moved to the north circuit working as a private safari guide in Tanzanian National Parks, spending most of his time in the Serengeti National Park, following the wildebeest and zebra throughout the year.
Sam: Private Safari Guide
Sam was born in Marangu Village the south-east of Mt Kilimanjaro. He has been fond of nature since he was a little boy living close to Mount Kilimanjaro. He was also inspired by his uncle who has been working as a safari guide for the past ten years.

Our Safari Guides
At Mikkwild Safaris, we pride ourselves on having exceptional safari guides who are naturalists with extensive experience and intimate knowledge of all the national parks in Tanzania. They possess a deep understanding of the African wilderness and its people, enabling them to deliver the ultimate safari experience.
When it comes to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, having competent and high-quality guides, cooks, and porters is of utmost importance.
Our local guides at Serengeti Journeys have undergone extensive training in first aid, mountain rescue, flora and fauna, and Kilimanjaro’s history. They are all registered with Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA).
Our Kilimanjaro guides are highly experienced, with most of them having climbed the mountain over 100 times! They are true professionals who possess an intimate knowledge of the mountain.
Here’s what you can expect from our Kilimanjaro guides:
1. High Safety Standards: Your guide can identify and prevent potential hazards, such as slippery trails and loose rocks. They are skilled in recognizing and treating altitude-related illnesses.
2. Climbing Knowledge: While Kilimanjaro trails are well-marked, your guide takes into consideration various factors when determining the best route, timing, and pace. They consider weather conditions, trail density, rest stops, and more.
3. Mountain Facts: Your guide possesses in-depth knowledge about the mountain, including climate zones, distances to campsites, and information about the geology, flora, and fauna. They enhance your trekking experience by providing insights into what you’re seeing and experiencing.
Our Kilimanjaro guides understand that customer satisfaction and a safe and successful climb are core values of our company.
Our Cooks/Chefs
Our dedicated bush chefs work wonders even in challenging conditions. Whether in the dusty plains of the Serengeti or the summits of Kilimanjaro, these diligent artists strive to provide you with fresh and delicious meals throughout your journey. Although they may be the least visible, they are the hardest-working individuals who create culinary magic.
Our guides are supported by assistant guides, cooks, and porters carefully selected by us. We believe that maintaining control over our personnel assignments ensures that your mountain crew adheres to our high standards. Regular interaction and close monitoring enable your mountain crew to perform at their best and provide consistent service trip after trip. We strive for seamless operations behind the scenes, allowing our staff to focus on our most important asset: the client.
Thanks to our hardworking porters, all you need to do during your climb is walk. Porters carry a wide range of equipment, including tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, food, water, cookware, gas, stoves, medical supplies, chairs, tables, and your camping gear. Their strength, skill, and stamina are incredible, and we encourage you to engage with them. Many of our porters can speak English, and interacting with them, sharing stories, and even singing and dancing together for Kilimanjaro songs can enhance your experience.
